Pigment grinding combines high shear, fine particles, surfactants and rising viscosity—conditions that trap both visible foam and microair. A silicone defoamer can restore mill efficiency, but excessive incompatibility may reduce color development, create floating spots, change rheology or produce craters after the color paste is let down into a coating. Procurement therefore has to link the grind, paste, finished coating and application film.
JY-2200 Paint Ink Defoamer is Juyou’s current owned route for this screening. Grade selection must be based on the current controlled documents and a representative formula. This guide helps pigment-concentrate, industrial-coating, architectural-paint, ink and toll-dispersion buyers define trials, release tests and commercial terms without relying on unlisted legacy grade claims.
Define the pigment concentrate
Record pigment identity and surface treatment, organic or inorganic type, pigment volume concentration, binder or binder-free design, dispersant, wetting agent, humectant, thickener, pH, solids and water quality. State the mill type, bead size, speed, temperature, number of passes and target fineness. Carbon black, phthalocyanine, titanium dioxide and iron oxide do not create the same air or compatibility problem.
Identify the final use: architectural paint, industrial coating, ink, leather coating or universal colorant. List the let-down resins and the required color, gloss, adhesion and weathering performance. A color paste that looks stable in its own container may fail when added to a different binder, so the approval matrix must include representative let-downs.

Measure foam and grind efficiency together
Use matched batches and a fixed fill level to compare untreated control, current additive and JY-2200 dosage steps. Record foam height, density, batch volume, temperature, power draw, flow and milling time to fineness. Entrained air can make viscosity readings unstable and reduce effective mill loading, so condition samples consistently before measurement.
After milling, measure fineness, viscosity at defined shear, yield behavior, density and color strength. A defoamer passes only if it improves air control without slowing pigment wetting or changing the required rheology. Retain the control for drawdown and let-down comparison rather than judging only the mill vessel.

- Temperature and mill power
- Time to fineness
- Viscosity and rheology
- Color strength versus control
Compare addition stage and shear exposure
Pre-addition can prevent air from forming, while grind-stage addition may expose the defoamer to enough shear for distribution. Post-addition can preserve activity and tune microfoam, but it may not remove air locked into a high-viscosity paste. Compare early, late and split addition using the same total dosage.
Record mixing order, local concentration and shear history. Some systems need a compatible let-down defoamer rather than one concentrate doing every job. The work instruction should state whether JY-2200 is added neat or prediluted, the approved mixing energy and the time before testing or filling.
- Pre-, grind- and post-addition
- Same total dosage comparison
- Local dispersion and shear
- Split-addition logic
- Controlled plant instruction
Protect color development and stability
Make white reductions, masstone drawdowns and rub-up tests as appropriate. Measure color difference, tint strength, transparency or hiding, gloss and floating/flooding. Inspect the paste and let-down for flocculation, seed, separation and hard sediment. A color difference may come from air, dispersion change or surface defect, so investigate the mechanism before changing dosage.
Age the concentrate and finished coating under required heat, freeze-thaw and ambient conditions. Recheck viscosity, color, foam and ease of remixing. Test more than one pigment and resin family before calling a grade universal. Define which formulations are approved and which require a new screen.
- Masstone and tint reduction
- Rub-up and flocculation
- Gloss and surface quality
- Aged viscosity and color
- Approved formulation matrix
Check filtration and applied-film defects
Pass the paste through the intended screen or filter and track pressure, throughput and residue. A silicone-rich deposit can interrupt filling or contaminate equipment. Then apply the final coating with the real method—spray, roller, brush, curtain or drawdown—at representative film thickness.
Inspect pinholes, craters, fisheyes, orange peel, haze and microfoam. Measure adhesion, recoatability and intercoat compatibility where required. Surface quality after application is the decisive compatibility gate; a foam-free color paste that creates craters in a customer’s coating is not a qualified result.
- Filter pressure and residue
- Application method and thickness
- Crater and fisheye inspection
- Microfoam and gloss
- Adhesion and recoatability
Control storage, packaging and release
Color pastes often ship in pails, drums or IBCs and may be drawn over weeks. Study top, middle and bottom samples after storage to detect migration. Define gentle remixing and whether recirculation is required before filling or use. Check package compatibility, headspace, closure and temperature exposure.
The raw-material specification should identify JY-2200, current revision, appearance, release fields, package and storage. The finished-paste release plan can include density, viscosity, fineness, color and a short foam or drawdown test. Retain linked samples of additive, pigment and paste lots for investigation.
- Top-to-bottom storage uniformity
- Remix and draw practice
- Package compatibility
- Raw-material COA
- Finished-paste release test
Compare total qualified cost
Calculate cost per accepted tonne of color paste and accepted coating output. Include dosage, mill capacity, cycle time, filtration, rework, rejected drawdowns, cleaning, storage failure and customer claims. The lowest unit price is irrelevant if the additive reduces color strength or restricts the paste to fewer resins.
Approve laboratory, pilot and repeat production lots. Confirm sample-to-bulk identity, MOQ, lead time, package, freight and change notification. Maintain control samples and a rollback formula until commercial scale is stable.
- Accepted-paste cost
- Mill capacity and cycle
- Color and defect rejection
- Pilot and repeat-lot approval

Frequently Asked Questions
What should a pigment-grind RFQ include?
Include pigment, PVC, binder, dispersant, solids, pH, viscosity, mill conditions, foam evidence, fineness, let-down resins, film defects, volume and destination.
Can one defoamer work at grind and let-down stages?
Sometimes, but it must be proven. Compare early, late and split addition because shear tolerance and final-film compatibility may require different balances.
Why can a defoamer change color strength?
Air, pigment wetting, flocculation and rheology can change dispersion and optical development, so matched color and rub-up tests are essential.
Which film defects should be checked?
Inspect craters, fisheyes, pinholes, haze, orange peel and microfoam, then verify gloss, adhesion and recoatability where required.
How is storage migration tested?
Sample top, middle and bottom after defined storage, remix as specified and repeat foam, viscosity, color, filtration and drawdown tests.
