Troubleshooting Color-Paste Settling After an Octyl Silicone Oil Change

When a color paste settles after a carrier change, adding more of the new ingredient is not a reliable diagnosis. Separate the effects of dispersion quality, solids loading and the structure of the continuous phase before deciding what to change next.

Evaluation scope

Octyl silicone oil belongs in a formulation evaluation, not in a stand-alone claim about pigment quality. Pigment surface treatment, the surrounding oil phase and the dispersing equipment all affect the result. The JY-787 product page provides the material identity; the following checks are proposed development work, not reported test results for a customer's formula.

Keep these variables in the record

ItemWhat to record
PigmentRecord chemistry, surface treatment and supplier lot.
Oil phaseKeep the full carrier composition visible in the comparison.
ProcessRecord mixing sequence, equipment and sample temperature.
StorageUse the same container and observation schedule for every sample.

Trial and review plan

  1. Compare retained control and candidate pastes at equal age. Record sediment depth, whether the sediment can be redispersed and the effort needed to restore uniformity.
  2. Check the batch record for different pigment lots, mixing time, vessel fill or temperature. A process difference can make a carrier comparison misleading.
  3. Assess the full paste rheology and the finished cosmetic after remixing. If structure is adjusted, make that a separate controlled trial rather than changing several additives at once.

How to use the results

Soft settling and a hard compacted deposit require different follow-up questions. Record what actually happened instead of using a single pass/fail label. Do not claim that a carrier alone provides the suspension structure required by every pigment system.

Information to include in an RFQ

Send the pigment list, oil-phase composition, intended cosmetic format and the current dispersion problem. Request the current JY-787 technical data, safety data and sample identification. Ask the supplier to distinguish documented grade properties from behavior that still requires testing in your formulation.

Frequently asked questions

Should a settled sample be discarded before evaluation?

Retain and identify it where safe to do so. Its appearance, redispersibility and comparison with the control can help locate the failure. Do not release an unstable batch merely because it can be stirred again.

Are these proposed checks certified results for this grade?

No. This article describes evaluation and procurement questions, not completed customer trials. Request current grade-specific documents and appropriate test evidence. The acceptance criteria must fit the actual formulation, process or assembly being qualified.
